Wayfarer - wormhole technology

Wayfarer (-36 to 146 AI = 2180 to 2360 AD)
Starship. The ship travelled, 43.4 light-years, from Earth to Pegasus (Iota Pegasus/ι Peg) in 180 years, carrying colonists in cryo-chambers. The Wayfarer's engines had a thrust of 0.0026 G. The year the Wayfarer left Earth is thought to be the last year of colonisation.

Wolf (Wolf 424)
Binary star system linked to another system by a stable wormhole. It is 14.1 light-years from Sol. Its scientific name is Wolf 424. Like many colonists living in systems with one habitable world the inhabitants call both their system and the planet they live on Wolf. They call themselves Wolves. Wolf is a first wave colony. Wolf was colonised sometime between 114 and 146 AI (2330 and 2360 AD) and discovered its wormhole sometime between 128 and 150 AI (2342 and 2366 AD). After Wolf developed wormhole technology and built starships, they coerced or conquered 2 dozen nearby worlds and absorbed them into the Wolf Dictatorship. In 168 AI (2382 AD) they began subjugation of the Centaur System. In 172 AI (2386 AD) The Centaur Rebellion began. Because of their previous easy victories and their early success against the Centaurs the Wolf government had become over confident. The worlds they were attacking did not have wormdrive technology, so they only had a small force defending the Wolf Wormhole. Centaur scientists secretly duplicated the wormdrive and built a fleet of ships that would take the war to enemy, turning the conflict into the First Interstellar War. The Centaur Attack Fleet evaded the Centaur System blockade and used the Wolf Wormhole to sneak into the Wolf system and take up position in orbit above the Wolf homeworld. Over the next two hours they dropped 48 fusion bombs on the planet, winning the war and driving the Wolves to the brink of extinction. Wolf was the homeworld of the Wolf Dictatorship but is now part of the Centaur Federation.

Wolf Dictatorship (WD) ([circa 146] to 175 AI = [circa 2360] to 2389 AD)
Former Military dictatorship (also known as Wolf Tyranny). After Wolf developed wormhole technology and built starships, they coerced or conquered two dozen nearby worlds and absorbed them into the Wolf Dictatorship. In 168 AI (2382 AD) they began subjugation of the Centaur System. However the Centaurs proved less easy to defeat than previous targets and by 172 AI (2386 AD) the Centaur Rebellion had begun. The rebellion turned into the First Interstellar War when Centaur scientists secretly duplicated wormdrive technology and built the Centaur Attack Fleet. The fleet evaded the Wolf ships and used the Wolf Wormhole to sneak into the Wolf system and take up position in orbit above the Wolf homeworld. Over the next two hours they dropped 48 fusion bombs on the planet, winning the war and driving the Wolves to the brink of extinction. The Dictatorship was one of the power blocs but all of its former planets, including Wolf itself, have now been absorbed into the Centaur Federation.

Wolf Tyranny (WT)
Alternative name for the Wolf Dictatorship.
Wolf Wormhole
Natural wormhole in the Wolf 424 (Wolf) star system. It is connected to a point in another star system. It was discovered sometime between 128 and 150 AI (2342 and 2366 AD).

wormdrive
One of the three developments of wormhole technology. A wormdrive creates an artificial wormhole, which connects a nearby point in space with a distant point in space. This allows a starship to travel instantaneously to the distant point. Opening and controlling the wormhole requires a large amount of energy. This limits the distance a wormdrive can move a ship in one jump and also results in a delay between jumps. Local gravity fields increase the energy required exponentially, effectively preventing a wormdrive from being used close to a star, planet or other large mass. The mass of the starship relative to the wormdrive is also an issue and a small ship, which is mostly wormdrive, can outperform a large ship with less wormdrive per cubic tonne. Wormdrives are also known as star-drives or jump-drives.

wormdrive inhibitor
Theoretical device that uses gravity manipulation principles to artificially amplify the gravity field generated by a starship. In theory this could prevent another nearby starship from using a wormdrives to escape during combat. In practice, however, the mass needed to prevent a wormdrive working is about the same as a small moon. This is much larger than the sort of mass today's gravity manipulation technology can generate.
wormhole
Natural connection between two distant points in space that allows instant travel between the two points. From 128 to 150 AI (2342 to 2366 AD) wormholes were discovered in six star system. The wormholes, and the systems where they were discovered, are: See also wormhole technology.

wormhole technology
Technological advances that were made as a direct result of the scientific research on stable wormholes. There are 3 types of wormhole technology. The first, wormdrives, has allowed interstellar commerce to be established. The other two types are more closely related to each other and have made many changes to the way we live. Gravity manipulation is applied in both contra-grav thrusters & inertial dampers. These two devices have enabled spaceships to travel faster & and all sorts of vehicles to safely accelerate and decelerate with high G forces. Forcefields can be set up to block or divert any type of particle or wave. While they have been embraced as a defensive technology they also have non-military applications.
