Impact, The (10.23 UTC, 5 Sep 2216 AD = 0 AI)
Moment in time when The Asteroid hit Earth. The Impact is always capitalised (often in quotation marks) when written and the word 'The' stressed when it is spoken to differentiate it from any other impact. Prior to The Impact, the poor people of Earth had rebelled against resources being used for colonisation, while they starved. Following the outbreak of The Bush Wars, the developed nations abandoned their colonisation programs and cut their space programs. Many space observatories had been, closed down by budget cuts or vandalised by anti-space protestors during The Bush Wars. Although some authorities did notice the danger, the general public was not informed. The secret efforts to divert The Asteroid away from the Earth were ineffective and it struck Central Mexico at 162 kilometres per second, killing 98% of Earth's population within a day. By 2 AI (2218 AD) only a handful of humans were alive and even they died by 4 AI (2220 AD). See also after impact (AI).

independent world
A planet that is not a member of one of the power blocs. In 284 AI (2500 AD), most of these worlds formed a loose alliance, signing a joint non-aggression pact and a mutual defence agreement. As The League of Independent Worlds is effectively a power bloc itself, the independents that signed its treaties are often referred to as League Worlds, and those that did not are called true independents.

inner power bloc
One of the power blocs which formed closest to Sol (Federation, Republic and Combine). Because the outer power blocs (Collective, Kingdom and UDP) have territory further out, the inner power blocs have limited room to expand. The distances from The Solar System to the homeworlds of the inner power blocs are: The League of Independent Worlds consists of colonies at various distances from Sol and does not have a clearly defined territory.
