calendar - cryogenics

calendar
System of months and days in year. Various local calendars exist, usually setting the year a colony was founded as the year zero. The old AD calendar (with its years and days based on the orbit and rotation of Earth) was abandoned by most colonies. The most widely accepted calendar is the AI or after impact calendar, which has the year The Asteroid hit Earth as the year zero, and years the same length as the AD calendar.

Cape Photographic Durchmusterung (CP/CPD)
One of four Durchmusterung star catalogues. Originally the names of stars listed in the Cape Photographic Durchmusterung consisted of the letters CP (or CPD), followed by a plus or minus and the declination (as viewed from a telescope on Earth). After a space a second number was listed. The four Durchmusterungs have now been combined into one, and the letters CP (or CPD) have been replaced by DM.

CD
Abbreviation for Cordoba Durchmusterung.
Centaur (Alpha Centauri/α Cen)
Star system that has a disputed number of stars and several Earth-like planets. It is 4.3 light-years from Sol. Its scientific name is Alpha Centauri (α Cen). The system is also known as Rigil Kentaurus. The inhabitants of the system call themselves Centaurs. Centaur is a first wave colony. The Centaur Federation claim that Alpha Centauri is a multiple star system with three stars, however most scientists outside the Federation define Alpha Centauri as a binary star system and state that the third, more distant star, is the centre of a separate star system called Proxima Centauri (or Proxima). The Federation claim of one multiple star system more than 13,000 AU wide is used to justify their policy of boarding any starships that enter the area. Because it is the closest habitable star system to The Solar System, it was the first, and most heavily, colonised system. The USS Enterprise (followed by several other vessels) left Earth in -92 AI (2124 AD) and arrived at the Centaur System in 45 AI (2261 AD). The system was subjugated by the Wolf Dictatorship in 168 AI (2382 AD). The Centaur Rebellion was the beginning of the First Interstellar War, which lasted from 172 to 175 AI (2386 to 2389 AD). At the end of the war the system was liberated but soon afterwards it was taken over again during the Centaur Military Coup in 176 AI and is now the homeworld of the Centaur Federation.

Centaur Attack Fleet
Small group of starships designed and built in secret by the Centaurs as a response to Wolf Subjugation. In just seven years (the last three during the First Interstellar War) the Centaur scientists managed study and duplicate the wormhole technology of the starships used by the Wolf Dictatorship. In 175 AI (2389 AD) the fleet was ready. Armed with H-bombs the fleet outflanked the Wolf ships and headed, not towards the Wolf 424 system itself but, to the star system at the end of the wormhole from Wolf 424. Once there they travelled trough the wormhole and dropped 48 fusion bombs on the homeworld of their oppressors ending the war. The military commanders controlling the Centaur Attack Fleet did not wish to give up their power at the end of the war and the Centaur Military Coup occurred shortly after the victory of the fleet.

Centaur Federation (CF) (176 AI onwards = 2390 AD onwards)
Military dictatorship. Shortly after the end of the First Interstellar War the leaders of the forces that had defeated the Wolf Dictatorship turned against their own government using the Centaur Military Coup to seize power. The Federation is one of the seven major power blocs.

Centaur Intelligence Agency (CIA) (172 AI onwards = 2386 AD onwards)
The military intelligence service of the Centaur Federation.

Centaur Rebellion (172 AI = 2386 AD)
Popular uprising against four years of Wolf Subjugation against the Centaur System. The rebellion was the start of the First Interstellar War. The wormhole technology possessed by the Wolf Dictatorship gave them an advantage, so the Centaurs lost most of the first battles.

Centaur Military Coup (176 AI = 2390 AD)
Revolution by Centaur military shortly after the end of the First Interstellar War. The military forces seized power throughout the Centaur System and formed the Centaur Federation.

Centaur/Wolf Conflict (172 to 175 AI = 2386 to 2389 AD)
Alternative name for the First Interstellar War.
CF
Abbreviation for Centaur Federation.
CGT
Abbreviation for contra-grav thruster.
CIA
Abbreviation for Centaur Intelligence Agency.
Cluster, The
Abbreviation for the Eden Cluster.
cockroach
Dominant life form on Earth following the environmental damage of The Impact.

CoD
Abbreviation for Cordoba Durchmusterung.
cold-fusion
Advanced form of fusion power. Unlike conventional fusion (hot-fusion) cold-fusion does not occur at high temperatures and pressures. Because of this cold-fusion power sources are incorporated into portable high energy devices (usually those incorporating wormhole technology).
cold-sleep
Slang term for cryogenics (especially when used in starship travel). Wormhole technology has made starship travel so fast that cold-sleep is now obsolete.

Collective, The
Abbreviation for the Free Worlds Collective.
colonisation (2124 to 2180 AD = -92 to -36 AI)
Period of time when people left Earth to colonise other star systems. Starships started to arrive at the colonies in 45 AI (2261 AD), and most had arrived by 146 AI (2360 AD). Because the wormdrive was invented in 145 AI, some historians argue that the dates of the colonisation age are -92 to 145 AI (2124 to 2359 AD) as, these were the dates when cold-sleep was the only option for long distance travel.

Combine, The
Abbreviation for The 9 Star Combine.
contra-grav thruster (CGT)
A type of normal space drive. It uses gravity manipulation to provide thrust for a spaceship or starship. Starship sized CGTs, are incredibly efficient, with a thrust/mass ratio 6000 to 1 (a starship with one tenth of its mass devoted to thrusters can accelerate at 600 G). Dropship or shuttle sized CGTs are less efficient, only providing a few G of thrust. Man sized contra-grav devices are even less efficient, unable to lift their own weight. Gravity manipulation devices are one of the three developments of wormhole technology. See also inertial dampers.

Cordoba Durchmusterung (CD/CoD)
One of four Durchmusterung star catalogues. Originally the names of stars listed in the Cordoba Durchmusterung consisted of the letters CD (or CoD), followed by a plus or minus and the declination (as viewed from a telescope on Earth). After a space a second number was listed. The four Durchmusterungs have now been combined into one, and the letters CD (or CoD) have been replaced by DM.
CP
Abbreviation for Cape Photographic Durchmusterung.
CPD
Abbreviation for Cape Photographic Durchmusterung.
cryo-chamber
Passenger compartment in a starship that keeps the passenger in suspended animation using the science of cryogenics. Rarely used since wormhole technology made cold-sleep obsolete.
[Source: A Short History of Mankind]
cryogenics
Science of freezing people and bringing them back to life. Most famously used on starships before wormhole technology was developed.
