Senator calls for Off-world Troops

In the wake of the discovery of a large weapons shipment, probably intended for the Valhalla First extremists, Senator Ralph Jacobson has called for an off-world peace-keeping force to be brought in to maintain law and order.

Senator Jacobson made the call during a senate debate about glacial mining. In the middle of this, rather heated, debate he stood up and asked "How can you keep talking about future prosperity, when we cannot keep the streets safe at night. We'll never prosper with the terrorists knife at our throat!" Despite the speakers attempts to bring order, Senator Jacobson continued in this vein for several minutes, finishing with an impassioned plea to "Get off-world troops in, if we cannot defeat the terrorists, for the future of our children is at stake."

Senator Helva Fredriksdottir, shadow defence secretary, talking to reporters at a later press conference, stated her opposition to Senator Jacobson's position. "This is exactly the kind of ill-considered mindless reactionary drivel we've grown to expect from the ironically named Future Party. What we need is proper investment in our own forces, not the importation of, what we all know will be, a thinly disguised off-world invasion force."

Olaf Larson, a spokesman for the Valhallan Independence Party, stated: "This is the kind of idea which will always be mooted as long as we keep links with other worlds. The real question here is not whether we should bring in troops, but who is paying Jacobson to spout this garbage."

Sources close to the president have declined to comment about the Senator's outburst, although they also stated that no measures were "currently ruled either in or out."

Advantage can cause sterility

The Valhallan Food and Drug Authority announced the results of its six month enquiry into the alleged side-effects of the recreational drug Advantage. They have found considerable evidence that frequent use of the drug can cause long-term damage to the human reproductive systems.

Advantage is produced on Valhalla by Perrot Pharmaceuticals who have always denied that the drug has any side effects. Today's report will clear the way for many civil and legal lawsuits against the company.

The VFDA has promised to examine the records of the initial drug trials which took place in 292 AI, to discover how the side-effects were not noticed before the drug became widely available.

If you have any questions about the side effects of Advantage, a help-line has been set up on 888-404040.

Easter Embargo may be lifted

News has reached Valhalla that a spokesman for the Easter Shareholders indicated last month that, should the terrorist activity continue to decrease at it's current rate, the embargo may be lifted.

A government spokesman was cautiously optimistic about this news.

Police abandon search for lottery bandits

Police have announced that they no longer expect to catch the group responsible for fixing the April 5th lottery.

They lay the blame for their failure squarely at the door of the press, broadcasted the leaked information, that all the winning tickets were bought from the same town during a one hour period, within hours of the lottery.

It is thought that the fraudsters were warned off by the media, and never tried to collect their winnings.

Military threatens worm

Ecologists have been staging protests outside the Van-Fredrikson Northern Polar Base at temperatures of nearly -90 Celsius.

They are up in arms about a plan to expand the base into a region inhabited by the few remaining Siberian Ice-worms known on the planet.

The worms were imported from Earth when the planet was colonised, and thrived during the early years of colonisation, but as their habitat has been destroyed, they have declined in number.

Holo-star killed in climbing accident

Barbara Stanwick, the much loved star of the long running holo-series Mark's Place, died yesterday.

Ms Stanwick was scaling the north face of Mt Redhog when she lost her footing and fell 180 feet into a morass.

Although her companions made all efforts to rescue her from the morass as swiftly as possible, she was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

The coroner declared that she succumbed to a combination of internal injuries and severe exposure. Despite the many rumours of Ms Stanwick's drug addictions, the coroner found no evidence that this had contributed to her death.

Solaris Mining announce profits

Yesterday Solaris Mining announced record profits of 163 million krona, from a turnover of only 890m Kr.

The directors put the steep rise in profits down to the sharp increase in mineral prices after Valhalla First attacks on on-world installations.

Solaris Mining made a loss of 34m Kr from their Valhalla based operations.

A Progressive Party spokesman called for the tax advantages given to such companies in order to encourage investment in this industry to be removed.

Shareholders can anticipate a record dividend in October.

Plea - Plague Planet Plight

The beleaguered planet Paradise has appealed for aid in fighting against a rapidly mutating virus, which is spreading amongst the population.

Reports from Paradise indicate plague symptoms include violent behaviour, mood swings, hallucinations, paranoia, and a rapid deterioration of bone structure. Death normally follows quickly after infection, as a result of mental deterioration, but the physical deterioration dooms the patient to death within a few days.

It is feared that this plague may have spread to other planets, several cases on nearby worlds having been reported.

Valhallan citizens are being warned by some commentators of the dangers of getting close to off-worlders, as they may be infected.
