New Construction Project

Universal Armed Services is to take possession of its latest acquisition this weekend. The half completed bunker complex just to the north of Vanden Starport has lain empty since the Future Party slashed its funding in the '88 budget. Now it is apparently to be used for training mercenaries, and UAS is expected to undertake a significant building program during the next few months.

The program should bring much needed employment to the Vanden area, which has been badly hit by the withdrawal of many large off-world corporations.

Bitter Campaigning Continues

As the October elections approach, political campaigning has reached a new fever pitch. In spite of their best efforts, the ruling Future Party has continued to loose ground to the other parties. In the remaining time available, it would require a record breaking reverse swing to return the current president for another term of office.

Valhalla First Factionalisation

There are some indications that VF may be undergoing a change in its power structure. The recent upswing in violence over the last 6 months may have caused a ground swell of feeling away from the more radical elements of VF's Order of Battle. Certainly, the original VF activists, who used passive methods only, are said to be horrified by the recent numbers of fatalities in operations such as Ravens Fjord. If a split does occur, it is likely to be bad news for the planet. Without the more traditional elements to restrain them, who knows what depths the newly formed splinter groups could stoop to.

SPNVL Charity Scandal

The Society for the Preservation of Native Valhallan Lifeforms has been rocked by scandal today. The charity has announced that its finance director, Susan Fox, has embezzled over 3.5 million 9SC of its funds. The SPNVL will be conducting a major investigation into how Ms Fox managed to embezzle so much money without being spotted. The whereabouts of Ms Fox are currently unknown, and the authorities are appealing for anyone with information on her to come forward as soon as possible.

Wilkinson Laser Stealth Technology Project Collapses

A source close to Wilkinson Laser stated that the failure of their new stealth screen technology was due to an inability to pass the high safety standards required by the Royal Pegasus Navy. When asked how their rival, Arnham Holdings, obtained approval, the source mentioned the close family ties between Sally French, Managing Director of Arnham Holdings, and her nephew, Admiral Corrin. A spokesman from Arnham Holdings denied any knowledge of safety issues with their product.

Dream Marriage Shattered

Ms Teri Rochester, the latest star discovered by Dream Weaver Studios has announced that she is breaking off her engagement to Dr Ian Calis, the Director of the St George Foundation. This announcement comes after months of rumours concerning the alleged infidelities between Dr Calis and Ms Alice Grange, Ms Rochester's understudy. Ms Rochester has said she will be vacationing with Friends on Easter for the next few months.

Pegasus Ship in Mystery Battle

A badly damaged Pegasus Navy Vessel landed late yesterday at Vanden Starport for emergency repairs. The ship has been identified as the Questions Later, a Type 3 Rapid Offensive Unit currently attached to the taskforce which has been assisting in patrolling our solar system.

The Pegasus Navy has not released any information as to how the vessel received such severe damage whilst ostensibly patrolling our peaceful solar system.

A spokesman for the Valhallan Independence Party stated that in the last few days the Valhallan Navy had lost three ships to an unknown aggressor, and that the damage to the Questions Later was consistent with burns from close range plasma fire. The Valhallan Navy deny that any ships have been involved in engagements in Valhallan space, and deny that any ships are unaccounted for.

Tuffnut Mining wins Major Contract

Local company Tuffnut Mining has fought off severe competition for the contract to develop the newly discovered sulphur deposits at Garden Bay.

The company publicly thanked the Vanden Area Council for their considerable support for their contract bid.

"Working together, we were able to put together an unbeatable package." said Senator Hatchard. Tuffnut are expected to hire 15-20 new permanent staff to help manage the new developments.

Stop Press

We have just received reports that the President has just completed a surprise press conference. We understand that the decennial elections, due later this month, have been postponed. The President is understood to have invoked article 28 of the constitution, which provides him with the ability to temporarily suspend the normal electoral process when the state is faced with immediate danger. An unconfirmed report has said that the President is keenly aware of the need for an impartial and fair election, and that he feels that the current terrorist threat makes vote rigging and polling station violence too likely and too serious to dismiss.

If this report is true, it represents something unprecedented in Valhalla's history. For although article 28 is part of the colony's original constitution, it has never been invoked. Until now.
