VALHALLA - DM+71 482 Star System

Power Bloc Strategic Intentions

Due to the systems location in relation to the original wormhole colonies, i.e. at some distance from them, it was also one of the last colonies to be contacted by the emissary vessels from the major powers. It is a 'true independent' planet on the boundary of 3 of the major power blocs, all of whom are eager to have the Valhalla system as their newest member.

The power blocs concerned are the Eridani Republic, the Centaur Federation, and the Star Kingdom of Pegasus. Additionally the League of Independent Worlds naturally would like the Valhallans to join up, and the 9 Star Combine has major business interests in the area.

Valhalla is of interest to the blocs for two principal reasons:

  1. In its own right it has a strong (albeit somewhat technologically outdated) economic base as well as abundant natural resources, so it would make a welcome addition to any power bloc.
  2. Even more crucially, the Valhalla system is strategically of great importance - the strategic planners in the Eridani Republic and the Centaur Federation, looking at their long term situation, are acutely aware that their territories are surrounded, enveloped by the other alliances. As such, they see the need for eventual expansion beyond the rim, in effect leapfrogging the outer alliances. To achieve this, both the Republic and the Federation need staging bases between their areas and the Rim, and the Valhalla system is an ideal location for both of them. The Star Kingdom, on the other hand, does not have that problem, and whilst they have good relations with the Republic they would like to see the Federation contained.
