Noans

An religious organisation with no central leadership.

Organisation Data

Description

The Noans are an organisation that believe that human life did not originate on Earth. They think that Earth’s religious texts are proof that mankind came from another planet (which they call Eden). They believe that, in the distant past, humankind developed space travel and travelled from Eden to Earth in a giant space ark.

Individual churches differ in why we lost our space technology. Some say that there was a war on Eden that was carried onto Earth, pushing the survivors back to the stone age. A second, popular, theory states that a social engineering organisation, called The Illuminati, suppressed mankind’s knowledge of the past and still secretly manipulates us to this day.

History

Since 245 AI (2461 AD) Noans have been trying to organise one or more archaeological expeditions to dig up government buildings, churches and similar buildings on Earth to search for clues to our "real" homeworld. The first fundraising attempt failed when the founder, Robert Lind, was arrested on Epsilon Eridani and convicted of embezzling the expedition funds.

In 263 AI (2479 AD) Noans membership increased up enough support for a second attempt. The ship, called "Arc II", left Troy (DM-39 14192). However, an explosion in the wormdrive prevented them from leaving the system and the crew had to be rescued. After this expedition failed they openly accused the Centaur Federation of working behind the scenes to stop starships from visiting Earth.

In 279 AI (2495 AD) the CF Ambassador to the 9 Star Combine was on a Nine Star News talk show when the senior Noan on Troy called in, accused the Centaur Federation leaders of being puppets of the Illuminati, and made allegations that the CF framed Robert Lind after robbing the Noans themselves.

The CF ambassador walked off the show and went on to accuse the Noan of slander in a Trojan court. Although the Noans were not a popular religion on Troy, a lot of people were happy to see the Centaur Federation being publicly embarrassed by them and they had a lot of support from the local population. Encouraged by the public support, the Noan leaders refused to back down and after the Trojan court ruled against them, they took the case all the way to the Combine Supreme Court. They even made further accusations, suggesting that the Federation had sabotaged the engines on Arc II. Unfortunately for the Noans, their arguments and conspiracy theories had no legal proof behind them. The judges were eventually forced to rule in favour of the Federation. This decision was very unpopular with the public.

The Centaur Federation immediately hired bailiffs on Troy, to move in to enforce a large award for damages and costs. The CF managed to force the Noans into bankruptcy 6 weeks later. On other planets local branches of the Noans started to declare that they had no legal connection with "the organisation of the same name on Troy" The Combine government quickly declared that their own court’s decision applied specifically to Troy and that Noans in other parts of the Combine were not liable for the action of Trojan Noans. Most of the other power blocks followed this declaration. However, back in the Centaur Federation the government shut down the Noans, ceased all their assets and arrested many of their leaders.

Despite the loss of over half the Noans funds, the organisation gained a lot of popular support from people who dislike the Centaur Federation. Although the Noans were careful not to openly slander the Federation again, the "eye of the Illuminati" was painted on CF property for over 10 years by graffiti artists.

In 295 AI (2511 AD) a Earth exploration charity called Arc III was set up that was carefully isolated from all the individual Noan Organisations. A ship was built and arrived back in the Solar System in 298 AI (2514 AD). A Centaur Federation fleet ceased the ship, accusing the crew of spying on the Alpha Centauri star system. Although many of the crew have been released, some are still being held without charge.

In 303 AI (2519 AD) Norman Porter, a fanatical Noan worshiper, hacked into StarCom and uploaded a virus that searched for documents about the star system Eden (DM-41 1288). The virus changed the name "Eden" to "The False Eden". Thousands of files were corrupted and StarCom lost a large amount of data when the virus went rogue.
