Lazer Tag™ was a combat game made by Worlds of Wonder (WoW) in the 1980's. Players use StarLyte "pistols" to "tag" sensors of opponents with an infra-red beam (no lasers are used). Your opponent is "tagged out" after six tags and you win. Other companies sold similar (but incompatible) systems. Tiger Toys bought the trade mark after Worlds of Wonder ceased trading. Tiger Toys Lazer Tag does not work with Worlds of Wonder Lazer Tag.
WoW "Real" Lazer Tag Role Playing: In the distant future duellists at the Lazer Tag Academy, fight by the Lazer Tag code. The official book (by RPG company TSR) contained few role playing elements as the game was aimed at children instead of live role players. I've never heard of anyone using the WoW Lazer Tag universe.
Today's "Lazer Tag" Games: Use original Worlds of Wonder (or home-made compatible equipment) for combat resolution and are usually live action role playing games. However many people incorrectly also call any IR combat system "Lazer Tag" (just like they call any vacuum cleaner a Hoover).
For information about other role playing games see Chapter 5.
