What is Role Playing?

Chapter 1 - Role Playing at VE

Many different types of role playing games exist. All have different backgrounds. They can be based on science fiction, fantasy, horror or anything else. Virtual Eclipse games are science fiction games, set exactly 516 years in the future.

Many role playing games are based on existing backgrounds from films, TV shows or books. These can be great to play, but role playing rules have to be developed around abilities and technologies that may not be explained in detail. Game writers must be careful about the continuity, and usually cannot communicate with the original author. To avoid these problems, we decided to do things the other way around, and create a background to fit around our rules.

The VE rules were developed with live action role playing (using Lazer Tag) in mind, and the VE universe was designed to fit around our LARP rules. When the VE Universe was first designed it was play tested using tabletop role playing.
