As an association of legal assistants/paralegals, our primary goals are continuing education and recognition in the legal field. Our membership consists of legal assistants/paralegals, legal professionals, and educators from the city of Richmond and the surrounding metropolitan areas. Membership provides an opportunity to exchange and share experiences, opinions and knowledge with other legal assistants/paralegals with a wide variety of experience and training.
As an affiliate of the National Association of Legal Assistants, Inc. (NALA), our members are governed by the ABA Standing Committee on Professional Ethics Opinion No. 316 (January 18, 1967), the American Bar Association Model Rules of Professional Conduct, and the Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility of the National Association of Legal Assistants, Inc., which have been adopted by the Richmond Paralegal Association.
RPA is also one of nine members of the Virginia Alliance of Paralegal Associations (VAPA), which provides a statewide voice within the legal community. VAPA has promulgated Educational Standards & Professional Responsibility Guidelines for paralegals/legal assistants in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Revisions to our bylaws were voted on and passed at the Annual Meeting on November 16, 2004. See a redline document of the old and new bylaws here. Governor Mark R. Warner has proclaimed October 2-8, 2005 as Paralegals' Week in Virginia. See the 2005 proclamation. Our annual members-only reception will be held on October 5, 2005 at SunTrust Bank.
