Abstract: IT security demands a layered approach. It is not enough to have anti-virus software running on the desktop, or the mail gateway, or the server. To be safe, it must be on all of these. The layered approach also works well in other aspects of IT security. Then again, layering is not always the answer, as some IDS (intrusion detection system) users are finding - distinguishing between false alarms and the real enchilada is not cut and dried.
